Useful first messages tend to include the problem in a sentence, the deadline if there is one, and whether you already have code or are starting clean. If you are not sure what you need yet, that is fine too. I will ask questions rather than guess.

I reply to every serious enquiry, including the ones where I am not the right fit. In that case I will say so and, where I can, point you somewhere better.
